They are both diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. They are not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. The difference is origin: one formed in the earth, one grew in a lab.

How lab-grown diamonds are made

Two main methods are used: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition). Both produce real diamond crystal. Some stones receive post-growth treatment to improve color, which a grading report should note.

Can you tell them apart?

Not by eye. Telling them apart requires specialized lab equipment. Reputable labs identify origin on the report, and many lab-grown stones carry a laser inscription saying so.

Price and value

  • Lab-grown diamonds generally cost much less than natural diamonds of similar size and grades.
  • Lab-grown resale value is typically low, and prices have been falling over time.
  • Natural diamonds also resell for well below retail, so neither is a reliable investment.

Grading

GIA and IGI both grade lab-grown diamonds. Read the report carefully, and compare reports from the same lab when comparing stones.

Ethics and environment

Both options raise questions. Natural diamonds should come with assurances on sourcing. Lab-grown production uses significant energy, and its impact depends on the power source. Ask retailers for specifics and be wary of vague claims.

How to decide

  • Choose lab-grown if size and value for money matter most.
  • Choose natural if rarity and the stone's origin matter to you.
  • Either way, cut quality and an honest grading report matter most.

Yes. They have the same hardness and durability.
Natural diamonds typically retain more resale value, but neither should be bought as an investment.
